As a certified cat lady, I can name a thousand reasons why having a feline in your life is amazing – but changing litter is not one of them. Although I’d rather empty a cat litter box than pick up poop off of a sidewalk, the litter cleaning process is certainly not a pleasurable chore.
The smell, the dust, the breaking clumps – it’s the worst. We have tried many new litters over the years with most have been let down. But all litter is not created equal.
There is an eco-friendly, lightweight litter that can monitor your cats’ health too. A 30 day supply is delivered to your door every month so no more carrying 14-pound bags of litter to your home. Oh, and did I mention delivery is free?
Behold Pretty Litter.
I’ve been using Pretty Litter for about a year now and I’m obsessed. Well, ok, I personality haven’t been using it. But my cat Abby has and I’m pretty sure she’s obsessed too so we wanted to do a PrettyLitter review from our personal experience.
Cleaning and changing litter doesn’t even feel like a chore anymore. It is honestly life changing and I am never going back to clumping clay litter. It holds up to it’s the promise of being lightweight, dustfree, highly absorbent, and order absorbing.
What is Pretty Litter?
Pretty Litter may sound like an oxymoron but this litter is actually pretty. It’s a white, crystal-based clump free litter made of made of absorbent silica gel and developed by a team of veterinarians.
This silica gel formula absorbs the moisture out of the urine and traps the smell. Water in your cat’s urine evaporates leaving only the silica crystals so all you need to do is scoop the poop. No more collecting the clumps just simply mixing the litter around is enough to refresh it maintaining odor control.
You might be thinking, don’t those silica gel packets aways say “do not eat” on them? Don’t worry, if your fur baby licks their paws after using the box, PrettyLitter presents no danger. The non-clumping crystals are safe for cats. It is made of all naturally occurring minerals and they don’t add any fragrance additives.
Did you know that your average clumping clay litter can contain bentonite which expands with moisture to clump the urine? If your cat licks their paws after exiting the litter that clay can expand within their digestive tract. Oh no!
PrettyLitter can save your cats life
Cats are notorious for hiding when they aren’t feeling so great so catching a problem early on often doesn’t happen. Unfortunately, a cat may be very sick before the owner realizes something is wrong.
Early detection is crucial when it comes to diagnosis and treating illness. There are many things that can be taken from a urine sample. It can detect many health issues from urinary tract infections to kidney disease, to infection and inflammation.
I have certainly never met a cat that was willing to pee into a cup so PrettyLitter can alert you to the potential presence of several common feline illnesses right in the litterbox.
There are color-changing indicators in the litter to help you monitor your cat’s urine for abnormal acidity and PH levels outside the average range. They also can detect the visible presence of blood.
Any other color changes can be signs of the following potential health issues:
- Red: Detection of blood, which may indicate Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder (FLUTD), bladder stones/crystals, kidney stones, bladder inflammation, certain types of kidney disease and clotting disorders. In rarer cases it can also mean bladder cancer, or an internal injury.
- Blue or Dark Green: High alkaline, which may be present if your cat has certain types of urinary tract infections. High alkaline in the urine can increase the risk of crystal/stone formation.
- Orange: Abnormal acidity, which may be a sign of metabolic acidosis or kidney tubular acidosis. Calcium oxalate crystals can be more likely to form in acidic urine. Acidic urine does not necessarily mean these crystals/stones are present, but it is the ideal environment for them to form.
For a healthy cat, you will see the color range somewhere between yellow and olive green.
I am fortunate that I can’t personally speak to PrettyLitter saving my cats life because I’ve only seen yellow but there many people how have been grateful to have found out of an issue before it was too late.
PrettyLitter delivered to your door
The best part about PrettyLitter for me is having the monthly subscription. No more remembering when you need to refresh the litter. When my delivery arrives I know its time to change the litter. And it’s not a big todo. Just out with the old and in with the new.
Four pounds of litter lasts an entire month (for one cat) so no more schlepping a 14 pound of bag clumping litter bag of 2 flights of stairs anymore.
Wait, did you say have a multi-cat home? No problem. They will send enough every month for all your kitties. Note that if your cats share a kitty litter box and you notice a color change, PrettyLitter recommends extra bags of PrettyLitter in case you need to isolate their bathrooms and see which cat is having an issue.
Also, if you are using a larger size litter back for a big cat you will want to order an extra bag a month and use just half of that bag along with the first bag. You will want at least 3 inches of litter lining the tray if your cat is a digger.
So, should you try it?
Yes! If you want:
- Less Scooping
- 80% Lighter Litter
- Naturally Occurring Minerals.
- No Smell
And let us not forget the best part, PrettyLitter has built-in health monitoring making it easier for you to spot a potential health issue before urgent care is needed. This can save your cats life and a boatload of vet bills.
It gives me peace of mind, and Abby seems to love it. We keep the box is in our living room but you wouldn’t even know it was there because there is no litter odor. We have a top loading litter box so I haven’t really had to deal with much tracking. PrettyLitter also works with self-cleaning boxes.
